How do I Become a Registered Professional Planner?

In order to become a Registered Professional Planner (RPP), you must obtain certain skills, knowledge, and experience. An RPP has a university degree, usually in planning or a related area, has acquired a minimum of two years of relevant planning experience, and has successfully completed examinations set by OPPI. These examinations include a written examination to demonstrate your knowledge of planning skills, and an oral examination that demonstrates your understanding of professional conduct, principles, and responsibility.

Most planners begin their careers by going to university to obtain a degree in planning. Several Ontario universities offer undergraduate and graduate planning programs, leading to a bachelor's or master's degree in planning. You are encouraged to visit the Web sites of Ontario's recognized planning programs. If you have questions, representatives from these schools would be pleased to talk to you about their programs and send you information on their entrance requirements.

Some planners do not have a planning degree and have learned their skills on the job, working for a number of years in a municipality or consulting firm or any organization that employs planners.

Members are solely responsible for ensuring that they obtain the quality and quantity of professional experience to meet the accreditation criteria should they wish to attain the RPP designation.
